President Lee Declares "All-Out War on Crimes Targeting the Socially Vulnerable" Following Gwangju Teen Murder

On May 14, President Lee Jaemyung ordered a significant strengthening of crime prevention and response systems targeting socially vulnerable groups, such as youth and women, following a violent crime in Gwangju that resulted in the death of a teenager.
During his opening remarks at the chief aides' meeting presided over by the President at the Yeomin-gwan in the Blue House that afternoon, President Lee stated, "To prevent such tragedies from recurring, we must strengthen our prevention and response systems significantly, with the determination to declare an all-out war against crimes targeting socially vulnerable groups such as youth and women."
President Lee first commented, "There was a heartbreaking incident in Gwangju where a youth lost their life due to a violent crime," adding, "I offer my condolences to the deceased student and extend my deepest sympathies to the bereaved family." He continued, "I also wish a swift recovery for the other student who was injured."
President Lee also called for special police operations to alleviate public anxiety. He stressed, "We must continue thorough special policing activities in areas of concern until public anxiety is eased."
He also announced a strong stance against secondary victimization online targeting the victims. President Lee said, "There must be zero tolerance for secondary victimization online aimed at the victims."
He reiterated, "I once again offer my condolences to the deceased," and urged, "All public officials should do their utmost for public safety, which is the foremost duty of the state, with a heightened sense of responsibility."

This incident occurred at around 12:11 a.m. on May 5, on a walkway near a university in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. A man in his twenties attacked a high school student he did not know with a weapon, resulting in the death of a female student, while a male student who responded to her screams for help was also seriously injured, according to investigations.
