“Training as If It's Real”… Gwangsan District in Gwangju Conducts On-Site Inspections to Prepare for Heavy Rainfall
Inspection and Maintenance Completed for Over 100 Pumps
Strengthening Response Capabilities Through Realistic Flood Scenario Drills
"If there is air in the pump hose, it will take more time to drain the water, so you must make sure to fill it with water before starting the engine."
Gwangsan District in Gwangju has taken steps to strengthen its on-site response capabilities in preparation for heavy rainfall during the summer. Considering the increasing frequency of extreme downpours that bring large amounts of rain in short periods due to climate change, the district also conducted a pump operation drill simulating an actual flooding scenario.
According to Gwangsan District on the 15th, a pump operation drill was held over two days, from the 13th to the 14th, at Hwangryong River Songsan Neighborhood Park. The drill involved all 21 neighborhoods within Gwangsan District, disaster response departments, and the local autonomous disaster prevention group.

Pumps are equipment used to drain water from areas affected by flooding. Gwangsan District explained that this drill focused on drainage training under the assumption of an actual flooding situation.
Alongside the drill, Gwangsan District also conducted a comprehensive inspection of approximately 100 pumps deployed in 21 neighborhoods. Equipment with minor malfunctions or worn-out parts was either repaired on-site or had parts replaced immediately.
Previously, Gwangsan District offered hands-on training to 38 local managers responsible for 192 drainage gates in the area and completed pre-inspections and maintenance for 25 disaster prevention facilities, including drainage pump stations.
