Children's Day Late-Night Urban Order 'Preemptively Blocked'... Daegu Police Arrest 44 for Street Racing Attempts
Three-Dimensional Deployment at 17 Gathering Spots, Preemptive Crackdown
Further Investigation Based on Video Evidence From 459 Cases
The Daegu police conducted a special crackdown on illegal street racers threatening urban traffic order around Children's Day, arresting 44 people on the spot. The police are being credited for preemptively blocking and quickly responding to late-night racing attempts, which could have led to large gatherings and intersection blockades.
The Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency announced that from 11:00 p.m. on May 4 to 6:00 a.m. on May 5, they deployed 192 officers to 17 major gathering spots where street racing activity was anticipated. The deployment included sidecars, undercover patrol teams, traffic investigation teams, mobile units, and regional prevention units. They also dispatched 73 vehicles, including patrol cars, sidecars, and unmarked vehicles.
In response to the racers’ tendency to evade crackdowns by frequently changing locations, the police operated a mobile response system focusing on key intersections and anticipated travel routes. Some motorcycles attempted to occupy intersections while moving in small groups, but the officers stationed at the scene immediately blocked the gatherings and dispersed the crowds.
During this operation, 30 drivers who engaged in illegal racing in violation of police orders were apprehended for violating the Road Traffic Act, including running red lights, crossing the centerline, riding on sidewalks, and not wearing helmets. In addition, one person was booked on charges of joint dangerous behavior, two for driving without a license, ten for drunk driving, and one for a motorcycle-related special theft, for a total of 44 arrests made on site.

Prior to the special Children's Day crackdown, the Daegu police also carried out a focused advance operation against motorcycles from April 27 to May 4. During this period, they detected 459 violations of the Road Traffic Act, such as running red lights, crossing the centerline, and not wearing helmets, focusing on preventing the spread of a racing culture in advance.
The police plan to further identify and strictly punish participants in the illegal racing based on the video evidence and movement analysis collected at the scene.

Late-night street racing in downtown areas on Children's Day is not merely an issue of noise complaints or traffic violations. Intersection blockades and reckless driving are public safety threats that endanger both pedestrians and drivers. The response by the Daegu police is significant in that it focuses not on a 'show of force,' but on blocking gatherings from the outset and holding violators accountable through evidence collection. There must be strict law enforcement without exception against urban street racing that puts citizens' safety at risk.
