[Click eStock] "Sekonix to Benefit from Rising Demand for Automotive Camera Lenses amid Autonomous Driving Expansion"
Independent research firm GL Research stated on the 30th that Sekonix is emerging as a key beneficiary in the automotive camera lens market as autonomous driving technologies become more widespread. Researcher Park Changyoon particularly predicted that rising demand will accelerate, driven by the expansion of Nvidia-based autonomous driving platforms and strengthened collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group.
Sekonix is an optical component company that initially grew on the back of its mobile camera lens business, and is now restructuring its operations to focus on automotive camera lenses and automotive lamps. The company has established a vertically integrated system that covers all processes in-house—from optical design and mold-making to injection, coating, assembly, and inspection—enabling it to secure competitiveness in the high-reliability automotive lens market.
Recently, the expansion of the Nvidia-centered autonomous driving ecosystem has become a focal point. Hyundai Motor Group and Nvidia are strengthening their partnership based on the DRIVE Hyperion platform and are working to build autonomous driving systems that can be scaled from Level 2+ to Level 4. As autonomous driving technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, the number of cameras installed per vehicle and the required performance naturally rise. Sekonix supplies automotive lenses through Hyundai Mobis and also has experience supplying products related to Nvidia, positioning it to benefit directly within the autonomous driving hardware value chain.
The automotive camera lens market has entered a phase of structural growth due to advancements in autonomous driving technology and the tightening of safety regulations. The number of cameras per vehicle is increasing from the previous 2–3 units to over 10, while high-end electric vehicles are increasingly being equipped with more than 12 units. At the same time, requirements for high resolution, HDR, and low-light performance are also rising, which is leading to higher product unit prices. This trend is resulting not only in higher shipment volumes but also in improved profitability.
The range of applications is also expanding. Sekonix has broadened its product portfolio beyond traditional rear-view cameras to include surround view, front and lane recognition, and driver monitoring. Furthermore, the company is expanding the scope of its optical technology to diverse fields such as AI robots, HUDs, and AR/MR. As autonomous driving technology advances, the importance of cameras as sensors for recognizing information inside and outside vehicles is expected to grow even further.
