Kim Geon on Jeong Dongyoung's Dismissal Recommendation: "Out of Sync with the Blue House and U.S.… Measure for Security"
Assemblyman Kim Geon of the People Power Party stated on April 28 that, regarding the dismissal proposal for Minister of Unification Chung Dong-young submitted by the People Power Party, "Since taking office, Minister Chung has been out of sync with the President, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of National Defense, and has also caused friction with our ally, the United States." He emphasized, "The dismissal proposal is a minimum measure to uphold the fundamental principles of national security."
During a five-minute free speech at the National Assembly plenary session that afternoon, Assemblyman Kim said, "Minister Chung's remarks have created diplomatic and security risks, and subsequently, even partial suspension of intelligence sharing on North Korea between South Korea and the U.S. has heightened concerns over the trust and security cooperation within the alliance."
Assemblyman Kim pointed out, "Since taking office, Minister Chung has continued to make unilateral statements on overall diplomatic and security policies without coordination." He added, "Regarding the controversy over the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the Minister of Unification unnecessarily clashed with the Commander of the United Nations Command, causing the public to worry whether cracks were forming within the alliance that protects our national security."
He went on to address the controversy over the leak of North Korea-related information, which served as the reason for submitting the dismissal proposal. "The government belatedly explained that Minister Chung had referred to private sector information," he said, "but the remarks by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) cited by Minister Chung did not even mention Guseong by name. Furthermore, the CSIS report he later referenced did not include any content confirming the existence of a uranium enrichment facility in Guseong."
Assemblyman Kim noted, "The People Power Party has repeatedly demanded correction of Minister Chung's irresponsible words and actions, but internal discord within the government has persisted, ultimately leading to a situation that undermines the South Korea-U.S. alliance and international trust." He stressed, "The People Power Party has determined that the deterioration of our diplomatic and security capabilities and the crisis facing our national interests caused by Minister Chung can no longer be ignored."

Assemblyman Kim stated, "There is no division between ruling and opposition parties when it comes to national security. The dismissal proposal, submitted out of a sincere desire to safeguard the Republic of Korea's diplomacy and security, must not be taken lightly," adding, "A plenary session must be convened for thorough discussion and a vote."
