Dramatic Rescue After Being Spotted by Cement Carrier
A diver in his 50s who went missing while engaging in underwater leisure activities off the coast of Uljin, Gyeongbuk, was rescued from the waters off Samcheok, Gangwon, after approximately 12 hours. It has been determined that he was swept away by the current, became separated from his group, and drifted in the sea at night before being discovered by a passing vessel.
According to the Uljin Coast Guard Station and other authorities on April 27, diver A went missing while taking part in underwater leisure activities with his group off the coast of Jukbyeon Port, Uljin County at around 10:33 a.m. on April 25. It was reported that a total of seven people, including A, entered the water at the time.
When A did not surface, a report was filed, and the Coast Guard launched a search operation by dispatching patrol vessels and a rescue team to the scene.
About 12 hours after the missing person report, at around 10:46 p.m. the same day, A was found in the waters near Imwon Port, Samcheok City, Gangwon Province, approximately 26 kilometers from the location where he went missing. At the time, a passing cement carrier spotted A floating on the sea and reported it to the Coast Guard, who promptly rescued him upon arrival.
At the time of the rescue, A complained of symptoms of hypothermia, but his life was not in danger and his overall health condition was reported to be relatively stable.
During the Coast Guard's investigation, A reportedly stated, "I became separated from my group after being swept away by the current during the underwater leisure activity."
