Strengthening Policy Demand Linkages and Practical Applicability
Expanding International Cooperation for Climate Change Response
The Korea Maritime Institute held the '2026 First Policy Advisory Committee' meeting at its main office in Busan on April 17.
This meeting was organized to collect opinions from external experts on topics such as the 2026 research projects and key initiatives, plans for international cooperation and major events, and current issues and future directions for each research department, with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness and practical impact of policy research.
On this day, representatives from academia, industry, and government attended the advisory committee meeting to engage in in-depth discussions on major issues and research directions in the maritime, fisheries, shipping, and port sectors. The participants emphasized the need to strengthen the connection to government policy needs and to conduct research focused on national policy tasks to enhance policy applicability.
They also suggested reinforcing research capabilities in industries closely linked to the national economy, such as shipping and logistics, and expanding policy support that can be tangibly felt by the industry. Additionally, there were proposals to conduct research on global agendas such as the marine environment and climate change, in parallel with addressing short-term issues.
Ambassador Kyeon Jongho emphasized, "As the agendas of maritime affairs and climate change are rapidly converging, it is now time for Korea to actively identify policies and research that can lead the international community."
Vice President Yoon Seongsun stated, "We are focusing on discovering projects that will lead to tangible research outcomes in response to changing policy environments," adding, "We will reflect the opinions of the advisory committee members to generate research results that can be utilized in the field and increase policy contributions."
