Gwangmyeong City to Provide Up to 4 Million Won for Heating and Cooling Systems in Energy-Vulnerable Welfare Facilities
Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province is strengthening practical support to protect energy-vulnerable groups amid the ongoing climate crisis.
On April 22, the city announced that it will implement the "Climate Gap Reduction Welfare Facility Heating and Cooling Support Project" to improve the heating and cooling environment in welfare facilities and reduce the burden of energy costs for users of these facilities.
This project is a public-private partnership involving Gyeonggi Province and Korea Electric Power Corporation, focusing on reducing the energy gap exacerbated by climate change and strengthening the foundation for energy welfare.
As abnormal weather such as heat waves and cold snaps becomes commonplace, there is a growing need to improve the heating and cooling conditions in welfare facilities used by vulnerable groups.
Accordingly, from April to December, the city will support the installation of high-efficiency heating and cooling systems in seven welfare facilities within its jurisdiction, including comprehensive senior welfare centers and senior citizens' centers. Each facility will receive up to 4 million won in subsidies for installing first-grade energy-efficient products.
This initiative is particularly meaningful as it represents a collaborative model in which Gwangmyeong City, Gyeonggi Province, and Korea Electric Power Corporation share funding responsibilities, enabling participation from both the public and private sectors.
Choi Hyemin, acting mayor (vice mayor) of Gwangmyeong City, stated, "As climate change intensifies, differences in heating and cooling environments can lead to a decline in quality of life. We will expand our support to reduce gaps in energy welfare and enable citizens to live in a more comfortable environment."
