The aim was to improve the cityscape and create a pedestrian-centered, safe road environment by reorganizing the tangled overhead wires and utility poles.
The total project cost amounted to 6.12 billion won, with 983 million won provided by the national government, 2.172 billion won by the city government, 1.571 billion won by Korea Electric Power Corporation, and 1.394 billion won by telecommunications companies.
The project was jointly implemented by Korea Electric Power Corporation and telecommunications companies. After Hanam City was selected for the underground wiring project contest by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in October 2023, construction began in March 2025. The city held a ceremony on March 10 to mark the removal of the first utility pole, followed by the removal of an additional nine poles on March 31, steadily carrying out the work in stages.
On the morning of the project completion date, starting at 9 a.m., the remaining eleven utility poles in the section from Sinjang Sageori to Trinity Silver Care (formerly The Barun Hospital) were removed at once, successfully completing the removal of all twenty-four utility and communication poles in the area.
Previously, this section had faced ongoing safety concerns due to narrow pedestrian spaces and obstructed visibility caused by utility poles and wires. However, with the completion of this project, a more pleasant and safer pedestrian environment is anticipated.
An official from Hanam City stated, "Through the underground wiring project, we expect not only improvements in urban aesthetics but also significant enhancements in pedestrian safety and everyday convenience for citizens," adding, "We will continue to steadily improve the infrastructure in the old town district to enhance its environment."
