The province plans to pilot a data-driven safe driving management system for city buses under the public management system in the second half of this year.
To fundamentally address dangerous city bus driving behaviors such as speeding and frequent sudden lane changes, Gyeonggi Province is promoting a plan to integrate the Korea Transportation Safety Authority's extensive digital tachograph (DTG) data analytics with the province's internal systems.
The new system will record and analyze a total of 11 risky driving behaviors captured by the digital tachograph, including rapid acceleration, sudden braking, speeding, and abrupt lane changes. Based on the collected data, the province will objectively grade and visualize the safe driving levels by driver, vehicle, and route, and provide this information directly to transport companies and their employees.
By the second half of this year, the province aims to complete the development and pilot operation of the system, creating a management environment where each driver can check their own driving habits and independently practice safe driving.
Gyeonggi Province expects that the safe driving management system will not only strengthen the safety net but also deliver the added benefit of improving operational efficiency for bus services. Systematic safe driving reduces unnecessary fuel consumption and generates tangible financial savings, such as lower insurance premiums due to fewer accidents.
In addition, the province plans to incorporate the resulting safe driving grades into future bus service evaluations and establish a thorough follow-up system, including safety training and customized coaching based on these assessments.
