Donghae City Accelerates Final Improvements to Stadiums and Sports Facilities Ahead of Provincial Sports Festival
Donghae City in Gangwon Province is accelerating its preparations for the 61st Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Sports Festival and the 19th Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Sports Festival for the Disabled, shifting its entire approach to an "execution-centered system" ahead of the events.
In addition to managing the sporting events, the city is inspecting overall readiness in areas such as accommodation, food, transportation, and safety. At the same time, it is bringing stadium facility improvements to their final stages to welcome both athletes and spectators.
Since last year, Donghae City has been carrying out extensive renovations of major sports facilities, centered on Donghae Well-being Leisure Town, with a total project cost of 8.9 billion won.
Donghae General Stadium, which is heavily used by citizens, is undergoing exterior maintenance, repairs to both the interior and exterior tracks, and restroom remodeling. The goal is to complete all construction by the end of April, ensuring the facility is ready to host opening and closing ceremonies as well as major matches.
At Sunrise Hockey Stadium and the auxiliary stadium, artificial turf replacement is underway. At Dongtuneun Baseball Stadium, where baseball games are held, comprehensive facility upgrades are in progress, including scoreboard installation, dugout improvements, and artificial turf replacement.
The National Sports Center will be closed until the end of May due to replacement of heating and cooling systems and flooring work, while electrical work at Donghae Gymnasium is being carried out in phases. These improvements are being made to benefit both athletes and citizens.
Alongside major construction projects, the city also plans to complete minor facility enhancements, such as updating stadium signage and improving the surrounding environment, within April to ensure smooth movement for athletes and convenience for spectators.
Moving forward, the city will sequentially release updates on various aspects of its preparations for the provincial sports festivals, including stadium facility and operational readiness, volunteer recruitment, citizen participation, tourism and commercial area integration, and atmosphere for the opening and closing ceremonies, sharing progress with citizens.
