'Zero Casualties This Summer'... Gyeonggi Province Invests 7 Billion Won to Prevent Typhoon and Heavy Rain Damage
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government is allocating 7 billion won of provincial funds to prevent casualties caused by typhoons and heavy rains during the summer season.
On March 26, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government announced that, under the direction of Acting Governor Kim Sungjung, it will work with cities and counties to install automatic water level gauges equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) and information and communication technology (ICT) functions, flood detection alarm devices, and automatic shut-off systems in eight major types of facilities, including underpasses and semi-basement residences.
The project will cover a total of 1,601 sites across eight categories.
The main project details include: installation of flood detection alarm devices at 105 underpasses; installation of flood detection alarm devices at 884 semi-basement residences and flood barriers at 129 residences; installation of flood detection alarm devices at 33 underground parking lots in apartment complexes and flood barriers at 17 complexes; installation of automatic shut-off systems at 157 riverside walkways; installation of in-cabin broadcasting systems at 210 campsites; installation of automatic water level gauges at 51 reservoirs; installation of surface displacement meters (subsidence measurement equipment) at 15 steep slopes; and maintenance and dredging of rainwater inlets.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government plans to allocate the budget within March, providing an unprecedented 100% project funding incentive to ensure that the purpose of the emergency prevention project is not undermined.

Acting Governor Kim Sungjung stated, "As it is becoming increasingly difficult to predict disaster patterns such as torrential rains caused by the climate crisis, it is important to minimize disaster management blind spots and establish a stable disaster response system through advance preparation. Through this project, we will do our utmost to prevent casualties this summer by fundamentally blocking any loss of life that may occur if residents or relevant officials fail to recognize danger or evacuate in time."
