He Traveled 12 Hours Daily for 105 Days, but After His Wife's Passing Says, "It's Hard to Accept"
Donations Poured In After His Story Spread
Parting With His Wife, He Said, "My Heart Is Torn Apart"
The story has been shared of an 80-something man who traveled to the hospital every day for 12 hours over a period of 105 days to visit his bedridden wife.
According to recent reports from Chinese media outlet CCTV and Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, Chen Achong (82), a resident of Zhoushan in Zhejiang Province, China, undertook an arduous daily journey for 105 consecutive days to visit his wife, who was admitted to the intensive care unit. The couple has been together for over 50 years. His wife, Xue (76), was hospitalized in the ICU after suffering a stroke a year ago, which was later complicated by severe pneumonia.
Due to their son's work situation, he was unable to help with caregiving, leaving Mr. Chen alone to look after his wife. Every morning, he would wake up around 4:30 a.m., prepare food himself, and take several buses to reach the hospital.
The ICU visiting hours were limited to just 30 minutes from 10:30 a.m. each day, but even after the visit, he would remain in the hospital hallway until late in the afternoon before taking the bus back home. The round trip took a total of 12 hours.
To save money, he carried homemade food in a basket. During the short visiting hours, he would hold his wife's hand tightly and talk to her constantly. Reminiscing on their life together, he would say, "I remember how well you took care of our home while I worked in the fields," and "You always washed my clothes so cleanly and saved the best part of the fish for me."
He meticulously tended to even the smallest details, wiping his wife's face and straightening her blanket. He spent all of the over 100,000 yuan (about 22 million won) he had saved for medical expenses, and his son contributed by selling their house to help pay the hospital bills.
Mr. Chen's unwavering devotion inspired support from those around him. The hospital adjusted visiting hours for his convenience, the bus company waived his fares, and after his story became known, more than 140,000 yuan (about 30 million won) in donations were collected.
However, a miracle did not occur. On the 13th, after visiting his wife as usual and preparing to leave, he received a call from the hospital informing him that her heart had stopped. He rushed back, but his wife had already passed away.
