On March 19 (local time), Secretary Hegseth stated at a battlefield briefing held at the Pentagon (Department of Defense Headquarters) in Washington, D.C., "Some are suggesting that this conflict will turn into an 'endless abyss' or a 'forever war,' but that is far from the truth."

He explained, "Our goal is to neutralize Iran's missile launch capabilities and defense industrial base, destroy its naval forces, and prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons."
Regarding the timeline for ending the war, he said, "I do not want to set a definitive deadline," adding, "Everything is proceeding smoothly according to plan." He continued, "The point at which we can say, 'We have achieved what we needed,' will ultimately be determined by the President."
