Police to Investigate Exact Cause of Accident
A member of the Gwangju Police Special Forces was accidentally shot in the leg by his own handgun during a tactical training session.
According to the Gwangju Police Agency, the firearm accident occurred at 10:58 a.m. on March 19, 2026, at the Special Forces training center located in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju.
As a result of the accident, Special Forces Lieutenant A sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh and was transported by 119 emergency responders to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, his injuries are not life-threatening.
At the time of the incident, Lieutenant A was conducting a tactical drill that combined rappelling and live-fire exercises. It has been determined that the handgun discharged as he was returning the weapon to his holster after completing target practice, leading to the accident.
The police believe that the firearm discharged accidentally when the trigger was caught on clothing or equipment as it was being holstered.

A police official stated, "Once the officer completes treatment, we will conduct a thorough investigation into the exact cause of the accident," adding, "We will also review whether the training guidelines were properly followed and proceed with the necessary follow-up procedures."
