Netflix to Deploy Full Content Delivery Technology for Global Live Broadcast of BTS Concert
Seamless Service with Encoding and Multi-Failure Recovery
"Global Fans to Enjoy in the Same Subscription Environment"
Netflix announced on March 18 that it will deploy all of its content delivery technologies for the global live broadcast of BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan)'s comeback performance, which will take place on March 21 at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul.
This "BTS Comeback Live: Arirang" marks Netflix's first-ever live event in Korea. Previously, Netflix has streamed live events in various countries, including "Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson," "NFL Christmas Game Day," "WWE," and "Skyscraper Live: Climbing High-Rise Buildings."
Netflix plans to deliver seamless live streaming by leveraging its proprietary content delivery technologies, including advanced video encoding, distributed traffic load balancing, triple-layer safety mechanisms with multi-failure recovery systems, and a dedicated live operation mode.
The video encoding technology reduces the size of content uploaded to Netflix and efficiently utilizes bandwidth, supporting various resolutions and picture qualities. The system automatically adjusts video quality according to the user's network environment and device.
Netflix will also apply "load balancing" technology to distribute traffic between servers, optimizing for a live broadcast environment. A triple safety mechanism automatically switches to backup or tertiary encoders if the main encoder fails, while a multi-failure recovery system minimizes streaming delays. Netflix explained that these measures are intended to ensure a stable viewing experience even during large-scale simultaneous access.
These technologies are underpinned by Netflix's proprietary content delivery network (CDN), "Open Connect." Netflix stated, "Since its introduction in 2012, we have built a network in partnership with more than 1,000 internet service providers worldwide," and added, "Over the past decade, we have reduced bit rates by about 60% while maintaining the same video quality." The company also mentioned, "We are developing technology that will enable streaming of our entire content catalog with approximately one-fourth the data currently required."
Netflix expressed its commitment to enabling BTS fans around the world to enjoy the performance simultaneously within the same subscription environment. Netflix said, "We are mobilizing all of our accumulated live broadcast expertise to ensure this historic moment in K-culture can come to life."
