Court Approves Broadcast of Lee Sangmin's Appeal Trial over 'Media Power and Water Cutoff'
Special Prosecutor Submitted Broadcast Application to Court the Previous Day
The appeals trial of former Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sangmin, who is accused of ordering the suspension of electricity and water supply to media companies during the 12·3 Martial Law, will be recorded and broadcast.
The Criminal Division 1 (Presiding Judge Yoon Seongsik), which handles insurrection cases at the Seoul High Court, announced on March 18 that it has approved the broadcasting of the appeals trial regarding former Minister Lee's charges, which include participation in major insurrection duties. Previously, Special Prosecutor Cho Eon Seok's team submitted an application for broadcasting to the court the previous day.
The approval covers the entire duration of every court session, from commencement to adjournment. However, the court may partially suspend or restrict the broadcast if there are special reasons, such as protecting the rights of parties involved in the case.
According to the court's decision, recording is scheduled to begin with the first appeals hearing for former Minister Lee, which will be held at 2 p.m. on the same day. After the trial concludes, the recorded footage will undergo a process to anonymize personal information before being released on the internet. Former Minister Lee was sentenced to seven years in prison at the first trial for participating in the insurrection by conveying former President Yoon's instructions to cut off electricity and water supply to media companies during the 12·3 Martial Law.
