Seongjae Im Returns to the Tour, Aims for a Comeback in the 'Snake Pit'
Competing at the "Snake Pit" Valspar Championship
Late Start Due to Wrist Injury, Missed the Cut in Both Events
Fond Memories of Tied Fourth Place at This Tournament in 2019
Sungjae Im is aiming for a rebound.
The battleground is the Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour, with a total prize fund of 9.1 million dollars, taking place at the Copperhead Course (par 71, 7,352 yards) of Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, United States, on March 19 (local time).
This tournament follows two major signature events: the Arnold Palmer Championship, with a total prize fund of 20 million dollars, and The Players Championship, often called the "fifth major," which offered a total prize fund of 25 million dollars. As a result, most top-tier players, including world number one Scottie Scheffler from the United States and number two Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland, are skipping the event to rest. Representing Korea, Sungjae Im, Tom Kim, and Kim Sung-hyun will be competing.

View original imageThere is keen interest in Sungjae Im's performance. In January, while preparing for the season, he injured his right wrist and focused on rehabilitation in Korea. Due to lingering pain, he missed the first seven tournaments of the 2026 season, including major events such as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational. His world ranking, which had peaked at 17th last year, has dropped to 82nd.
This is a critical moment for a comeback. Sungjae Im, who got a late start to the season because of his wrist injury, played in both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship but missed the cut in both. It was disappointing that he failed to shoot under par even once. Im said, "I was unable to earn points since I couldn't compete in tournaments for about two months compared to the other players, but there are still four major tournaments and many big events remaining. I will focus on entering larger tournaments and steadily accumulating points."

At Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course, the key holes are 16 through 18. This stretch, known as the "Snake Pit," is notoriously challenging. Players who can deliver accurate shots have an advantage. Sungjae Im, whose precise iron play is a strength, performed well here in 2019, finishing tied for fourth. Again this year, the outcome for players is expected to hinge on this critical stretch.
