"Stronger Will for Reform Requires Greater Restraint in Methods"
Taenyeon Kim, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, shared his thoughts on March 16 regarding President Jaemyung Lee's remarks, "Reform cannot be achieved by pushing it through bluntly." Assemblyman Kim summarized the President's requests as "reform with trust," "communication with the people," "original intent," and "unity."
As a fifth-term senior lawmaker, Kim expressed his reflections through social media on this day, after hearing about the previous day's conversation between President Lee and the Democratic Party’s first-term lawmakers. He said, "Hearing what the President shared with the first-term lawmakers left me in deep thought for quite some time," and introduced that the President’s call for reform "resonated with me first and most deeply."
He remarked, "The stronger the will for reform, the greater the need for restraint in methodology," adding, "Direction over speed, and trust over rhetoric determine the longevity of reform. That is precisely what the President reminded all of us of yesterday."
Regarding the emphasis on direct communication with the public, he stated, "No matter how clear the systems and legislation are, if the public cannot feel them directly, it amounts to only a half-completed reform," and added, "The voices of the first-term lawmakers who directly conveyed the need for the supplementary budget to the President yesterday likely stemmed from the same sense of presence."
On the mention of the President’s original intent, he said, "As one gains more experience, they become more skillful and adept. However, that very proficiency can gradually dull the resolve one had at the beginning," and continued, "To keep the original intent is not just to remember the starting point. It is to constantly ask oneself, every day and at this very moment, why we are here." He further added, "As a senior member myself, I am no exception."
Kim also expressed a strong sense of camaraderie, referencing the December 3 Martial Law and the impeachment crisis. He said, "We must never forget the weight of history we created together with the people in the square," and emphasized, "Whether first-term or senior lawmakers, in the face of such camaraderie, we all stand on equal footing."
