"K-Pop Demon Hunters" Wins Oscar for Best Animated Feature
From the Golden Globes and Grammys to the PGA and now the Academy Awards
An animated film based on Korean culture has taken home a trophy at the Academy Awards in the United States.
Directed by Maggie Kang, the Netflix original film "K-Pop Demon Hunters" won the Best Animated Feature award at the 98th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on March 15 (local time), surpassing other nominees including "Arco," "Elio," "Little Amelie," and "Zootopia 2."
The story revolves around the girl group Huntrix, who face off against the evil spirit boy group Saja Boyz, who prey on human souls. The film creates a unique universe by combining outstanding visual effects (VFX) with the dynamic energy of K-pop. It successfully translates Korean sensibilities and popular music into a universal appeal within the mainstream Hollywood system.
The film achieved overwhelming commercial success and critical acclaim. It broke Netflix's all-time viewership record and swept ten awards at the Annie Awards, known as the Oscars of animation. It also dominated the Golden Globes in January and the Grammys in February, while producer Michelle Wong won the Best Animated Theatrical Feature at the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards.
