Expanding the Open-Source Ecosystem: CJ Group Joins the "Osori Project"
Accelerating Open Innovation Based on K-Content Technology
Providing Reliable Data and Minimizing Legal Risks
CJ Group will provide open access to its internally verified database (DB) free of charge to help expand the domestic open-source ecosystem.
On March 13, CJ Group announced that it has joined the Osori (OSORI, Open Source DB Integration) open-source project as a new member. The Osori Project is a collaborative effort involving eight major Korean conglomerates, including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Kakao, Naver, and four affiliates of Hyundai Motor Group, as well as the Korea Copyright Commission. This marks the first time a non-IT company has established its own open-source management system (governance) and contributed the results back to society. The addition of CJ's verified open-source DB is expected to further diversify Korea's open-source ecosystem.
On the 13th, at the Seoul office of the Korea Copyright Commission in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, CJ Group and Commission officials posed for a commemorative photo after signing a business agreement for the "Osori Project." Utilizing this open-source information enables companies to reduce the time and cost required for developing new technologies. However, as issues such as security vulnerabilities and license violations may arise, systematic management is essential.
Since its launch in 2023, the Osori Project has provided information on over 60,000 software licenses to help small and medium-sized enterprises with weaker risk management capabilities, as well as individual developers, use open-source software more safely and strategically.
CJ Group has recently been recognized for its systematic management capabilities, with its affiliates obtaining international standard certifications related to open source one after another. Last year, CJ CGV and CJ Logistics became the first companies in the Korean entertainment and logistics industries, respectively, to acquire international standard certifications for open source, demonstrating their leadership within their sectors. Earlier this month, Olive Young also obtained the same certification for the first time in Korea's beauty and health industry, officially recognizing the security and transparency of its open-source governance.

Since 2023, CJ has established its own open-source management system and set up a compliance framework for preemptively identifying potential risks through an 'Open Source Council' that includes IT, legal, and security experts. In particular, CJ has standardized processes to enhance trust in K-culture technologies by making open-source verification mandatory for the development of group systems, including K-content platforms such as TVING and Mnet Plus. The company is also proactively managing legal risks related to open source in response to its global business expansion, such as Olive Young's entry into the US local market.
