Pohang City Provides Support for Seismic Performance Evaluation and Certification Costs
On March 12, the city of Pohang announced that it will implement the "Earthquake Safety Facility Certification Support Project" to ensure the seismic safety of buildings on the Handong Global University campus.
This initiative is part of the "Earthquake Safety Facility Certification Support Project" promoted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and is being carried out for Handong Global University, which was selected as a participating institution last year.
Starting from March this year, the city will conduct seismic performance evaluations on 21 buildings within the campus. Pohang will provide a total project budget of 470 million won to assess the seismic safety of the buildings and proceed with the earthquake safety facility certification process.
This project is expected to contribute to providing a safer educational environment for students.
The Earthquake Safety Facility Certification Support Project is a system implemented by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety since 2019 to ensure public safety.
Pohang City is promoting the project through proactive administration to encourage the improvement of seismic performance in private buildings, protect the lives and property of citizens from earthquakes, and enhance public trust in the safety of buildings.
Buildings that are confirmed to be safe through seismic performance evaluations are certified as "earthquake safety facilities." Eligible buildings include those used daily by citizens, such as schools, hospitals, stations, and multi-use facilities, as well as any other buildings wishing to obtain certification.
The support includes up to 30 million won for seismic performance evaluation costs to confirm building seismic safety, and up to 10 million won for expenses necessary for earthquake safety facility certification. Even if a building does not meet the certification criteria, the seismic performance evaluation costs will be provided separately.
Since 2020, Pohang City has been implementing this project and has invested approximately 720 million won so far to support seismic performance evaluation costs for 30 buildings.
Among them, 15 buildings have secured seismic performance and have attached the "Earthquake Safety Facility Certification Plaque."
Buildings that receive certification are officially recognized as earthquake-safe, which helps enhance the trust and value of the buildings. As a result, satisfaction among both citizens who use the facilities and the building owners is high.
