Mayor Park Hyungjun: "Busan Global Hub City Special Act Stalled in National Assembly for Two Years"
"Democratic Party Blocking Progress,
Need for Legislation to Be Explained at Public Hearing"
Amid ongoing delays that have kept the "Busan Global Hub City Special Act" from passing the National Assembly for over two years, attention is now being drawn to an upcoming public hearing on the proposed legislation, which aims to elevate Busan to a global city.
On March 11, Park Hyungjun, mayor of Busan, stated on his social media, "For over two years, the Democratic Party has blocked the passage of the 'Busan Global Hub City Special Act' in the National Assembly. Ahead of the local elections, the National Assembly will hold a public hearing on this act."
Mayor Park further emphasized that the legislation is essential for Busan to become a global city on par with Dubai or Singapore. He explained that he has met with Democratic Party lawmakers to persuade them to pass the bill and has submitted a petition signed by 1.6 million Busan citizens to the National Assembly, all to urge the enactment of the law.
He added that even last winter he held a three-day tent sit-in in front of the National Assembly to appeal for the legislation, but the bill made no progress at that time either.
Mayor Park pointed out that as the passage of the special act is delayed in the National Assembly, Busan's development is slowing, and the city is at a disadvantage in global competition as inter-country competition intensifies.
He stressed, "Although we have the goal of making Busan the maritime capital of Korea and a global maritime hub, related legislation has been stalled for the past two years." He emphasized that this public hearing must not end as a mere formality.
