The city expects that this designation notice will further elevate the historical significance and symbolism of the region's cultural heritage. It also believes that this will provide citizens with an opportunity to more closely appreciate the value of local cultural assets.
The Namyangju Bongseonsa Temple Bronze Bell is a large bell that was cast and enshrined when the eighth king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Yejong, founded Bongseonsa Temple to pray for the repose of his father, King Sejo. After being designated as a Treasure in September 1963, it is now set to be elevated to the status of National Treasure after approximately 63 years. It is known as the only example among early Joseon royal bronze bells to remain in its original enshrinement location since its creation.
This bell partially incorporates the style of Chinese bronze bells, yet also displays the unique decorative elements and aesthetic form characteristic of Korean bronze bells. It is considered the consummate example of early Joseon Dynasty bronze bell artistry. Furthermore, with almost no casting cracks or structural defects and its excellent preservation, it is highly valued as a cultural asset of great academic significance.
The National Heritage Administration plans to collect and review opinions from various sectors during a 30-day public notice period for the Namyangju Bongseonsa Temple Bronze Bell. Following deliberation by the Cultural Heritage Committee, it will make a final announcement to designate it as a National Treasure among state-designated cultural heritage.
