It offers degree programs aimed at strengthening agricultural economics and agricultural policy capacities for government officials and policymakers from a total of 11 countries, including Malawi, Thailand, Indonesia, and Nepal. The program seeks to enhance participants’ abilities to establish and implement agricultural and regional development policies in their home countries by sharing South Korea’s experiences and policy cases in agricultural and rural development.
This visit was arranged to allow participants to observe Yanggu County’s smart agriculture promotion policies and its response measures to the risk of regional extinction firsthand. The trainees attended explanations about the policy implementation system between the central and local governments, as well as Yanggu County’s direction for promoting smart agriculture, followed by a Q&A session and a tour of the smart farm facilities.
The Yanggu County advanced smart agriculture complex is a multipurpose facility built around a 4.0-hectare regionally specialized rental smart farm, complemented by a smart agriculture operation support center and a youth innovation residential town. The complex is being developed to address agricultural challenges such as a declining and aging farming population and climate change, as well as to implement and spread a northern-type smart farm model tailored to the climate and geographical characteristics of Haean-myeon.
Currently, strawberries are being cultivated in Smart Farm Building A (1.8 hectares), and from April, tomato cultivation will begin in Building B (2.2 hectares).
Kwon Eunkyung, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, stated, "Yanggu County has signed a business agreement with Gangwon National University to promote smart agriculture and is striving to attract more young people and strengthen the smart agriculture capabilities of farmers. This visit by the trainees has served as an opportunity to expand the international cooperation network, and it was a meaningful occasion to showcase Yanggu County’s excellent agricultural products and advanced cultivation facilities."
