From Tug-of-War to Gold Leaf Craft... National Intangible Heritage Events Across Korea Next Month

The National Heritage Administration and the National Heritage Center will hold public events for National Intangible Heritage across the country next month, where holders of these traditions will demonstrate their skills directly in front of the public.
On the day of Jeongwol Daeboreum, March 3, Yeongsan Juldarigi (Yeongsan Tug-of-War) in Changnyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, and Gangneung Nongak in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, will take place, with community games and street parades held to pray for a good harvest in the coming year.
On weekends, traditional performances will be presented in Seoul and Namwon, North Jeolla Province. At the Pungnyu Folk Theater in Seoul, the program will begin on March 7 with a performance by pansori holder Shin Younghee, followed by Gyeonggi folk song holder Kim Haeran on March 14, gagok holder Kim Younggi on March 21, and daegeum sanjo holder Lee Saenggang on March 27. On March 28, pansori holders Kim Ilgu and Kim Youngja will share the stage, and on March 29, pansori holders Kim Cheongman and Kim Suyeon will give a joint performance.
Gasa holder Lee Juna will meet audiences on March 27 at the National Gugak Center in Seoul, and pansori holder Lee Nancho will perform on March 29 at the Chunhyang Culture and Arts Center in Namwon.
On March 24, the Seokjeon Daeje, a grand Confucian ritual honoring Confucius and other sages, will be held at Bicheondang Hall in Sungkyunkwan, Seoul. From March 25 for three days, gold leaf master Kim Giho will demonstrate his craft at Geumbagyeon in Seoul.
