Over the past year, the committee has supported balanced regional development by deliberating on key policies such as the Local Era Plan and the Mega-Region Development Plan, as well as on major large-scale provincial projects, including the Yeongwol Regulation-Free Special Zone.
At this regular meeting, the committee finalized its 2026 operation plan and discussed ways to establish the committee's status and to strengthen organic cooperation with the Central Local Era Committee.
The main deliberation agenda included strengthening the practical functions of the second-term committee by expanding the number of subcommittees from the existing structure to a total of six, thereby laying the groundwork for more effectively reflecting the members' expertise across all areas of provincial administration.
In addition, the committee established detailed operating rules, putting in place institutional mechanisms for more systematic committee activities.
Subsequently, the committee reviewed the "Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Local Era Implementation Plan" for promoting local autonomy, decentralization, and balanced regional development, as well as the "Mega-Region Development Implementation Plan" aimed at fostering future industries through new-industry linkages and cooperation at the mega-regional level.
Chairman Hwang Haksu said, "Within the government's national balanced growth strategy of five growth poles and three special zones, we are facing a very grave situation from the perspective of balanced regional development, with discussions on the integration of administrative districts and delays in the National Assembly's passage of the third amendment to the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Act," adding, "Through in-depth deliberation and careful consideration at the committee level, we will fully carry out our role with the spirit of Dongjugongje, crossing the river together in the same boat."
