Jeongeup City Mobilizes to Prevent Farmland Flooding...Invests 13.6 Billion Won in Maintenance of Aging Irrigation and Drainage Channels
Jeongeup City will invest 13.6 billion won of municipal funds this year to carry out large-scale maintenance on 208 aging irrigation and drainage channels within the city. Jeongeup City plans to complete the construction work before the full-scale farming season begins, with the aim of fundamentally preventing flood damage to farmland.
This maintenance project was prepared as a preemptive response to unpredictable weather anomalies such as increasingly frequent localized heavy rain and typhoons. Concerns have been continuously raised about damage to farms due to insufficient capacity of existing drainage channels and deterioration caused by these weather anomalies, which have intensified rainfall intensity.
The sections to be improved are mainly those made of earth, where drainage efficiency is low. Jeongeup City plans to install modern structures such as bench flumes in these areas. By doing so, the city expects to suppress the growth of weeds (aquatic plants) in the summer, ensure smooth water flow, and secure stable water conveyance capacity even during heavy downpours.
In addition, to resolve areas that are frequently flooded, Jeongeup City will simultaneously carry out a separate maintenance project with a project budget of 1.02 billion won (530 million won in provincial funds and 490 million won in municipal funds). The project sites are: ▲ Disaster-risk prevention facility project (three irrigation and drainage channels, totaling 0.97 km) ▲ Shinyong District small-scale drainage improvement project in Sintaein ▲ Large-block land consolidation project in Majeong 1 District in Buk-myeon.
Jeongeup City plans to promptly complete the ongoing detailed design and finish the main construction processes before the busy farming season begins.
