"Rocky Island" Singer Kim Wonjoong Appointed Chairman of the Committee for Establishing the Asia Culture-Centered City
Kim Wonjoong, a singer famous for the song "Rocky Island (Bawiseom)," has been appointed as Chairman of the Committee for Establishing the Asia Culture-Centered City, a minister-level position.
The Presidential Office announced on the 5th that singer Kim Wonjoong has been selected as Chairman of the Committee for Establishing the Asia Culture-Centered City.
Presidential spokesperson Kang Yujeong said on the 2nd, "Kim Wonjoong is a familiar figure to the public, well known for 'Rocky Island (Bawiseom),' a song that captures the pain of the May 18 Democratization Movement, and 'To the Weaving Maiden (Jiknyeoege),' which embodies the Korean people's longing for reunification," adding, "As a cultural and artistic figure from Damyang in South Jeolla Province who lives in Gwangju, we expect him to make a significant contribution to developing Gwangju into both an Asia culture-centered city and a central city of K-democracy."
Chairman Kim Wonjoong was born in Damyang, South Jeolla Province, and graduated from Seoksan High School in Gwangju and the Department of Agricultural Economics at Chonnam National University.
He is well known as a people's singer and has participated in various initiatives for inter-Korean reunification.
Chairman Kim Wonjoong served as general director of the Gwangju Peace Music Festival in 2013. He also served as the South Korean chair of the South-North Musicians Council.
