"A New Standard for Rural Public Libraries": Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library Gains Popularity Two Months After Opening
Around 1,500 Visitors Per Day on Weekends
Attracts People from Nearby Cities Including Jeongeup, Jangseong, and Yeonggwang
A public library established in a small city with a population of 50,000 is drawing attention as crowds from all over the country flock there on weekends. Now in its second month since opening, the Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library, designed by one of Korea's top architects, is gaining fame not only for its renowned designer but also for its commitment to breaking away from the rigid image of traditional libraries and creating an open space for everyone.
According to the Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library on January 28, the number of visitors reached 1,782 on Sunday the 25th and 1,403 on Saturday the 24th, rivaling the popularity of famous restaurants. On weekends, the library's parking lot, nearby public parking lots, and even the surrounding roads are packed with visitors.
A Hanok Library Inspired by the World Heritage Site Jongmyo
The greatest secret behind the popularity of the Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library is its beautiful architecture. Architect Yoo Hyunjoon, who designed the library, was inspired by Jongmyo, reinterpreting the traditional beauty and depth of Korea through wooden structures. Inside, a modern "book mountain" bookshelf, reminiscent of a mountain of knowledge, enhances the joy of searching for and reading books.
A Library Open to Everyone
The sounds of laughter and camera shutters echo throughout the library. On one side, someone is engrossed in Han Kang's "The Vegetarian," while on another, visitors lounge comfortably reading comics and magazines. There are students studying, tourists in hiking gear curiously exploring, and local residents-all creating a scene that is both unfamiliar and unlike anything seen before.
The Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library is committed to being a library open to everyone. There are no separate reading rooms. Instead, there are tiered reading seats connecting the second and first floors, as well as reading spaces scattered throughout the stacks and corridors. Special attention was given to the children's section. One visitor remarked, "At other libraries, the quiet atmosphere made it difficult to bring my child, but here, it feels like a space designed for relaxation, so I feel at ease." There is also a cafe in one corner of the library where visitors can enjoy coffee and conversation.

Sim Deokseop, Mayor of Gochang County, emphasized, "To truly usher in a new era for local regions, it is crucial to meet the cultural needs of residents. Open cultural spaces like the Hwang Yunseok Library can serve as a bulwark against the decline of local communities."
