Emphasizing Social Harmony Beyond Conflict and Confrontation
Jinwoo, Chief Executive Monk of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, delivered a New Year’s address for the Year of Byeongo (Byeong-o), emphasizing the importance of peace of mind and social harmony beyond conflict and confrontation.
In his address, Jinwoo stated, “The root of conflict and confrontation in our society does not lie outside, but within each of our hearts.” He added, “In the new year, we need to pause our criticism of one another and take time to reflect on our own minds.” He went on to say, “When each of us finds peace within, the future of our society will become even brighter.”
He also pledged, “I will fulfill my responsibilities so that our society can once again move toward trust and empathy.” He continued, “As the leading order of Buddhism, we will remain by the people’s side as a source of comfort for the mind, and be a steadfast friend who holds the hands of the socially disadvantaged and marginalized neighbors.”
