Participation from 13 Village Fishing Communities
Growth Expected in Pristine Waters

On December 10, Gijang County released 310,000 abalone seeds into local village fishing grounds to restore fishery resources and increase fishermen's income.

This release was carried out as part of the "2025 Fishery Seed Purchase and Release Project," with a total project cost of 250 million won, equally funded by Busan City and Gijang County at 50% each.

About 100 people participated in the release operation, including representatives from Gijang County, the Busan Fisheries Resources Research Institute, the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency, and fishermen's organizations. The abalone seeds were released in the fishing grounds of 13 village fishing communities in the region.

Prior to the release, female divers (haenyeo) belonging to each village fishing community conducted meticulous work to increase the survival rate of the abalone. They removed predatory species such as starfish in advance, and on the day of the release, they personally dived to place the abalone at suitable locations.

The abalone seeds released this time are healthy individuals with a shell length of at least 4 cm that have passed disease screening by the Busan Fisheries Resources Research Institute. They are expected to grow to about 10 cm in the clean waters of Gijang. Gijang County expects significant resource recovery effects, as the area offers optimal conditions for abalone growth due to its pristine marine environment and abundant food resources.

County Governor Jeong Jongbok stated, "Gijang County offers favorable conditions for abalone growth thanks to its clean waters and excellent natural environment. We hope this release project will provide tangible benefits in strengthening the productivity of local fishing grounds and stabilizing fishermen's income. We will continue to make active efforts to restore fishery resources and establish a sustainable fishing industry."
