Toward a Safer Industrial City... 'Digital Twin-Based Integrated Control Center' Established at Pohang Steel Industrial Complex
AI, Digital Twin, and Drone Control: Establishing an Advanced Integrated Control System
Enhancing Worker Safety and Convenience... Expanding Everyday Smart Infrastructure
What if it were possible to predict a disaster 10 minutes or even an hour before it occurs?
The city of Pohang has established a "digital-based integrated control center" that combines advanced systems such as AI prediction technology, digital twin, and unmanned autonomous drone control, significantly enhancing the safety and environmental management of the Pohang Steel Industrial Complex.
On December 10, the city will hold an opening ceremony for the "Pohang Steel Industrial Complex Integrated Control Center" within the Pohang Steel Industrial Complex and officially begin operations.
Through this project, the city aims to fundamentally change the disaster response system and broadly improve everyday safety as experienced by resident companies and workers.
About 100 people, including officials from the Steel Management Corporation, representatives of major steel companies in the complex, and worker representatives, attended the opening ceremony to share the progress of the project and express their commitment to building a smart green industrial complex based on digital transformation.
Attendees expressed high expectations that the opening of the integrated control center would resolve the structural issues of the aging steel industrial complex and serve as a turning point for its transition into a sustainable industrial park.
This project was promoted as one of the selected projects in the 2022 Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's "Industrial Complex Remodeling Project" contest. A total of 13 billion won (8.5 billion won from the national government and 4.5 billion won from local government) was invested to build the control center, which utilizes Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to integrate and manage safety, environment, traffic, and disaster information across the entire complex in real time.
In particular, it is expected that the efficiency of the response system will be greatly improved, as chronic issues such as hazardous material accidents, odor and environmental pollution complaints, and traffic congestion within the complex can now be analyzed and predicted using digital technologies.
During the on-site demonstration following the opening ceremony, a real-time control system was showcased, simulating a scenario involving the release of toxic gas due to a fire. The control center immediately assessed the situation using six environmental monitoring CCTVs and two unmanned autonomous drones installed in the first phase of the complex. By combining this with weather information, the center demonstrated its ability to simulate the spread of hazardous substances and predict secondary damage to workers and residential areas.
With the establishment of this control center, Pohang City plans to broadly improve everyday safety, including addressing environmental complaints and traffic inconveniences within the industrial complex.
To achieve this, the city will sequentially implement a variety of services, including: ▲ AI-based flood prediction ▲ hazardous substance diffusion prediction ▲ advancement of the safety and health management system ▲ infrastructure to improve living conditions for workers such as smart streetlights, smart intersections, smart crosswalks, and smart bus stops ▲ expansion of IoT fire monitoring sensors and environmental monitoring sensors ▲ operation of the Green Industrial Complex Living Lab.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok emphasized, "I am confident that the Pohang Steel Industrial Complex will become a leader in the steel industry through digital transformation, and furthermore, will make a significant contribution to revitalizing the Pohang regional economy," adding, "We will actively support the establishment of a smart green industrial complex and spare no policy support for the steel industry and sustainable development."

He further stated, "By combining AI predictive modeling, digital twin, and drone control, we have built an industrial complex that can foresee even invisible risks," and highlighted, "The Pohang-style safety management model, which reflects the industrial structure, terrain, and climate characteristics of Pohang, is clearly differentiated from those of other cities."
