Hwaseong City Considers Renaming 'Osan-dong' to 'Yeoul-dong' to Resolve District Name Confusion
City Seeks Residents' Opinions on Potential Name Change
Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it will conduct a "resident opinion survey" from December 8 to December 14 to determine whether to change the legal district name of "Osan-dong," which falls under the jurisdiction of Dongtan 6-dong.
This survey aims to gather residents' opinions for or against the renaming of Osan-dong. Residents will be asked to choose between "Yeoul-dong" (name change) and "Osan-dong" (name retention).
"Yeoul-dong" is a proposed name that reflects the meaning of "Yeoul" (灘), derived from the Chinese characters for Dongtan (東灘). Currently, the name "Yeoul" is already used for facilities such as Yeoul Park and Yeoul Elementary School within Osan-dong.
The candidate names were selected based on the results of a previous "Osan-dong Name Change Survey" and reviewed by the Name Adjustment Council.
The survey will be conducted electronically or in writing for apartment complexes, depending on each complex's circumstances. In single-family residential areas, the survey will also be administered through in-person visits by local community leaders.
A city official stated, "Residents of Osan-dong have long experienced various inconveniences such as misdelivery of mail and confusion in administrative services due to sharing the same name with the neighboring city of Osan. This survey is an important step toward resolving these inconveniences and establishing a distinct regional identity."
