With the Gwangju superintendent of education election approaching next year, an official body has been launched to nominate a citizen candidate to compete against the incumbent superintendent, Lee Jeongseon. On December 8, the Gwangju Democratic Progressive Citizen Superintendent Candidate Nomination Committee held a press conference at the May 18 Democratic Plaza in Dong-gu, Gwangju, announcing its launch and future schedule.
The Citizens' Nomination Committee held a general meeting on December 4 at Jeonil Building 245, with 110 civic organizations participating, and elected An Seok, head of the Village Education Community Forum, as the standing chairperson. Additional organizations will be recruited until midnight on the same day.
At the press conference that day, Kim Yongtae, former head of the Gwangju branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union, Oh Kyungmi, former director of the Gwangju Office of Education, and Jeong Sunghong, former head of the Gwangju branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union, who are considered candidates for superintendent, attended. In January, the first and second policy debates will be held, and in early February, the final candidate will be determined through a vote by the citizen nominators and a public opinion poll of Gwangju citizens. Although the ratio for reflecting the two methods has not been finalized, a 1:1 application is being considered.
Eligibility for participation is open to anyone aged 14 or older as of next year, making it possible for middle school students to join. The membership fee for adult participants is 5,000 won, while those born between 2008 and 2012 are exempt from the fee.
At the press conference that day, Kim Yongtae, former head of the Roh Moo Hyun Foundation Gwangju Citizen School, Jeong Sunghong, former head of the Gwangju branch, and Oh Kyungmi, former director of the Gwangju Office of Education, all of whom are considered possible candidates for superintendent, were also present.
