On the morning of the visit, officials from the USFK Support Group, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of National Defense, and Gyeonggi Province toured the CRC site, directly confirming the urgency and necessity of developing the returned land. In the subsequent meeting, Mayor Kim Donggeun and Gyeonggi Province’s Second Vice Governor for Administration Kim Daesoon, among others, participated in a broad discussion on major challenges and institutional reforms.
Uijeongbu City explained that for decades, various parts of the city have been restricted as US military bases, limiting the utilization of urban space and expansion of infrastructure. As a result, the city has experienced an accumulation of regional decline, including a shortage of industrial sites, population outflow, and worsening aging demographics.
To address these issues, Uijeongbu City proposed to the government: ▲ conducting a comprehensive survey and reallocation of industrial areas in the returned land to resolve restrictions on new industrial designations due to overcrowding control regulations; ▲ the need for state-led development to secure self-sufficiency functions, considering the burden of infrastructure costs and poor local finances; ▲ and strengthening institutional arrangements and inter-agency cooperation in line with the recent state-led development direction presented at the Gyeonggi Northern Town Hall Meeting.
On the 4th, officials from the Office for Government Policy Coordination's U.S. Forces Korea Base Support Group (USFK Support Group), the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of National Defense, and Gyeonggi Province visited the Camp Red Cloud (CRC) site to receive briefings. Among these, the prompt return of the northern part of Camp Stanley and the approval for free use of the access road through Camp Red Cloud are critical issues that must be prioritized. If these two matters are resolved, it will be a clear signal that the state is genuinely committed to the development of Uijeongbu."
