Attracting a Variety of National Projects, Including Expansion of Regional Transportation Networks and Specialized R&D Initiatives
Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province has achieved a significant milestone by securing a total project budget of 1.7464 trillion won for last-minute budget increases at the National Assembly review stage, thanks to its all-out efforts to secure national funding for 2026.
The newly added major national projects include the Gumi-Gunwi Expressway (1.5627 trillion won), a demand-expansion battery testbed (35 billion won), the establishment of a testbed for materials and components for semiconductor equipment chambers (35 billion won), the Gumi Startup Field entrepreneurship hub (4 billion won), the construction of a commercialization base for electronic glass component materials using ultra-precision nanotechnology (13 billion won), designation as a carbon-neutral leading city (30 billion won), renovation of aging sewage pipelines at two locations in addition to the 4th complex treatment area (30 billion won), and the establishment of a cold-chain distribution system (700 million won). These funds have been broadly secured across various sectors, including transportation, industry, environment, and agriculture.
In particular, the Gumi-Gunwi Expressway will accelerate its implementation as next year's budget has been allocated immediately upon passing the preliminary feasibility study.
The establishment of a testbed for materials and components for semiconductor equipment chambers is expected to further boost the semiconductor-related industry as a follow-up project following the designation of a specialized semiconductor complex.
Until now, the city has made securing national funding its top priority, visiting central government ministries and the Ministry of Economy and Finance dozens of times since the beginning of the year to ensure the inclusion of key pending projects in the national budget.
During the National Assembly budget review process, the city worked closely with local lawmakers, visiting members of the standing and special budget committees to directly explain the necessity and urgency of the projects. As a result of these on-site efforts, the city was able to secure additional large-scale projects.
