Daejeon Mayor Lee Jangwoo: "22 Industrial Complexes Covering 5.35 Million Pyeong to Be Developed by 2030"
Wanchon Advanced Bio-Medical Innovation District to Expand to 200,000 Pyeong
Daedong, Songnim, Daebyeol, and Shinil Districts to Supply 480,000 Pyeong by 2030
On December 4, Daejeon Mayor Lee Jangwoo held a municipal briefing and announced, "We plan to establish four new industrial complexes-Daedong, Songnim, Daebyeol, and Shinil Districts-covering a total area of 480,000 pyeong (approximately 1.59 million square meters) by 2030."
Mayor Lee explained, "Daejeon is on its way to becoming a world-class economic city by fostering advanced strategic industries," adding, "A total of 22 industrial complexes, amounting to 5.35 million pyeong (approximately 17.7 million square meters), will be developed by 2030."
Daejeon's plan to develop 5.35 million pyeong of industrial complexes is progressing smoothly, with 13 sites totaling 3.05 million pyeong currently underway. With the announcement of the new 480,000-pyeong industrial complexes, the city can now pursue a total of 3.53 million pyeong.
The four new industrial complexes are: ▲ Daedong District (967,000 square meters, 300,000 pyeong) around Daedong Health Clinic in Yuseong District; ▲ Songnim District (231,000 square meters, 70,000 pyeong) near Yuseong JC; ▲ Daebyeol District (234,000 square meters, 70,000 pyeong) near Sannae JC in Dong District; and ▲ Shinil District (135,000 square meters, 40,000 pyeong) around the Defense Technology Quality Institute in Daedeok District.

In addition, an urban development project will be promoted alongside the construction of the industrial complex, creating a residential environment that integrates jobs, housing, and leisure, thereby revitalizing the local economy and achieving balanced development between the eastern and western parts of the city.

The plan is to create a pleasant urban industrial complex by linking it with the adjacent Jisu Sports Park and the abundant surrounding green spaces, providing citizens with opportunities for healthy leisure and sports activities.
Alongside this, an expansion plan for the Wanchon Advanced Bio-Medical Innovation District was also announced.
The Wanchon Advanced Bio-Medical Innovation District is a bio-focused development project utilizing the site of the relocated sewage treatment plant in Wanchon-dong, Yuseong District.
The original plan was to develop the relocated sewage treatment plant site as a 120,000-pyeong complex, but the plan has been expanded to about 200,000 pyeong by including the underdeveloped western area. The expanded area will feature residential, cultural, and lifestyle facilities to strengthen residential and leisure functions.
The original sewage treatment plant relocation site will be developed as a core bio hub focusing on industrial and research functions as initially planned.
Mayor Lee said, "The Wanchon District was selected in 2024 as an Opportunity Development Zone and a national advanced strategic industry 'Bio Specialized Complex.' We will establish it as Korea's leading bio industry hub by deploying key research and medical infrastructure such as the KAIST-Merck Joint R&D Center, Cancer Conquest Demonstration Hospital, and Knowledge Industry Center."
The Daejeon city government has been conducting basic planning and preliminary feasibility studies for the creation of new industrial complexes in these areas since last year. It announced that, following the completion of these new industrial complexes, the expected effects include an induced production effect of 397.2 billion won, an added value effect of 173.6 billion won, and the creation of 2,915 jobs.
Along with the announcement of the plans for the new industrial complexes, the city will restrict development permits for five districts (2,311,000 square meters, 680,000 pyeong).
This restriction on development permits is intended to prevent disorderly development and speculation in the planned industrial complex sites and to ensure systematic development. According to relevant laws, activities such as construction of buildings, installation of structures, and changes in land form will be restricted in these districts.
