Daegaya Goryeong Secures First National Funding for Ancient Capital Preservation... Boosting Its Status as a Historical and Cultural City
Three Major Projects Launched:
World Heritage Exploration Hub Center,
Ancient Capital Image Enhancement,
and Resident Activity Support
Goryeong County in North Gyeongsang Province has secured national funding for the Ancient Capital Preservation and Development Project for the first time since the official designation of the Daegaya Goryeong Ancient Capital in February 2025, providing a significant boost to the full-scale development of the ancient capital.
This budget achievement is considered a meaningful result of close cooperation between Goryeong County, North Gyeongsang Province, and the National Heritage Administration, aimed at strengthening the status of Goryeong as a historical and cultural city of Daegaya and revitalizing the local community through the use of cultural heritage.
The main projects related to ancient capital preservation and development included in next year's budget by Goryeong County are: ▲ Construction of the World Heritage Exploration Hub Center ▲ The Ancient Capital Image Restoration Project ▲ The Ancient Capital Resident Activity Support Project-a total of three projects.
First, the construction of the World Heritage Exploration Hub Center is Goryeong County's top strategic project. It will serve as a key visitor hub connecting the Daegaya Ancient Capital and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jisan-dong Ancient Tombs, and as essential infrastructure for building a tourism base focused on extended stays and experiential programs. The total project cost is set at 28.5 billion won, with 200 million won allocated next year for feasibility studies and the development of a master plan.
The Ancient Capital Image Restoration Project has secured a budget of 2 billion won for next year. The project aims to systematically improve streetscapes, architecture, and landscapes, as well as enhance pedestrian environments and outdoor advertising within the designated ancient capital area, thereby gradually creating a unified city image befitting a historical city.
The Ancient Capital Resident Activity Support Project will invest 80 million won next year to support a variety of resident-led programs, including community participation programs, resident group activities, village interpretation, education, and cultural events. This will strengthen the foundation for voluntary community involvement in the preservation and utilization of the ancient capital.
An official from Goryeong County stated, "We will create a model ancient capital that preserves historical and cultural resources while revitalizing the local economy, befitting Goryeong's status as the fifth designated ancient capital. We will do our utmost to secure national funding and follow administrative procedures to ensure that major projects, including the World Heritage Exploration Hub Center, proceed without delay."
