Samsung SDI Wins Korea Technology Award for ESS Fire Safety Technology
Innovative Achievements of the All-in-One ESS Solution 'SBB'
The Only Domestic Battery Company to Receive the Award
Samsung SDI has been awarded the prestigious Korea Technology Award, the nation's highest honor in technology, in recognition of its advancements in enhancing fire safety and cost reduction technologies for energy storage systems (ESS). It was the only domestic battery manufacturer to be included on the list of awardees.
On December 3, 2025, Samsung SDI announced that it received the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award at the '2025 Korea Tech Festival' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Established in 1992, the Korea Technology Award is a leading national technology prize jointly organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute for Industrial Technology Evaluation and Planning (KIET), recognizing achievements based on the value of technology, development capabilities, and commercialization performance.

During the review process, the company emphasized its world-class safety technologies that fundamentally prevent the spread of fire incidents and the implementation of a remote monitoring system at all domestic installation sites, significantly reducing fire risks.
The SBB is a power ESS solution that integrates batteries and safety devices within a 20-foot container. Based on highly durable prismatic batteries, Samsung SDI has applied its 'Enhanced Direct Injection (EDI)' fire suppression technology and 'No Thermal Propagation (No TP)' technology.
In October, Samsung SDI signed a business agreement with the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation to establish a 'safe ESS ecosystem,' further strengthening its technological reliability. The company noted that, as the evaluation weight for 'safety' has increased in the second central ESS contract market bidding, this award is expected to have a positive impact on its business competitiveness going forward.
