Goyang Special City Reaffirms Commitment to a Sustainable Carbon Circular Economy
Through Collaboration Among City, Technology, and Citizens
The "Climate Tech Future Strategy Symposium," hosted by Gyeonggi Province and Goyang Special City and co-organized by the Goyang Research Institute, Goyang Carbon Neutral Support Center, Gyeonggi Sustainable Development Council, Goyang Sustainable Development Council, and the Korea Iron & Steel Association, successfully concluded on November 27 at the Bitmaru Broadcasting Support Center seminar room.

View original imageThe symposium brought together experts in urban studies and resource circulation to explore decarbonization and carbon neutrality strategies encompassing urban systems, technological innovation, and citizen engagement in daily life.
More than 50 participants, including Goyang citizens, academics, industry representatives, and research institute officials, attended the event and showed keen interest in urban transformation strategies utilizing climate tech. Under the theme "A Carbon-Neutral Future City Opened by Cities, Technology, and Citizens Together," a wide range of discussions took place.
In a video welcome address, Lee Donghwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, emphasized, "Goyang will systematically reduce carbon emissions across all aspects of city operations through climate tech-driven innovation, and together with citizens, we will build a future city model that enhances sustainability."
Kim Woonnam, Chairman of the Goyang Special City Council, also delivered a congratulatory message via video, stating, "Achieving carbon neutrality requires both policy decisions and practical actions in citizens' daily lives. The Goyang City Council will actively provide institutional support and policy discussions to help realize a carbon-neutral city."
During the keynote presentations, Lim Jiyeol, Director of the Goyang Carbon Neutral Support Center, spoke on "Decarbonization Strategies in Urban Sectors," focusing on the direction of promoting decarbonized (carbon-neutral) cities centered on urban water management systems. He emphasized that the organic linkage of natural functions, climate technologies, and citizen-centered urban components is key.
Park Sangheon, Director of the Korea Iron & Steel Association, presented on "New Future Decarbonization Strategies," discussing decarbonization improvement measures through facilities for reusing discharged groundwater. He proposed various strategic approaches, including promoting the use of discharged groundwater, improving incentives for voluntary participation from the private sector, and connecting with policies related to carbon reduction.

View original imageIn the final keynote, Oh Eunseok, Chair of the Climate Crisis and Energy Transition Committee of the Gyeonggi Sustainable Development Council, delivered a presentation titled "Carbon Neutrality in Citizens' Daily Lives: Focusing on the Waste Sector." He highlighted the importance of citizen participation by introducing various carbon reduction strategies that individuals can practice, such as sustainable product design, green consumption, and strengthened waste separation, from the perspectives of resource conservation and resource circulation.
The panel discussion was moderated by Lee Hyundong, former Vice President of the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, with participation from Do Jongnam, Senior Researcher at the Korea Expressway Corporation Road Traffic Research Institute; Ahn Donguk, Senior Researcher at the POSCO Steel Solution Research Institute; Jang Dongbin, Policy Director of the Citizens' Power Generation Cooperative Federation; Lee Eunkyung, Member of the Goyang Sustainable Development Council; and Jeong Jaehyung, Director of the Hwaseong Carbon Neutral Support Center.
The panel engaged in in-depth discussions on integrated urban policy strategies based on climate tech to address the climate crisis. In particular, citizens who participated in the discussion directly shared environmental issues and the need for improvements they experience in daily life, further enhancing the sense of shared purpose in the debate.
