Mapo District Completes Major 2.4km Seongsancheon Renovation with 3.9 Billion KRW Investment
Flood Risk Mitigated and Pedestrian Safety Enhanced
Completion Ceremony to Be Held on December 2
Mapo District in Seoul (headed by Mayor Park Kangsoo) has completed the 2.4-kilometer environmental improvement project along Seongsancheon, stretching from Sacheon Bridge to the confluence with the Han River. The completion ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. on December 2 at the confluence of Seongsancheon and World Cupcheon.
This Seongsancheon maintenance project follows last year's environmental improvements to World Cupcheon. Over the course of a year, a total budget of 3.9 billion KRW (funded by both the city and the district) was invested to transform the aging urban stream into a safe and eco-friendly ecological space.
Seongsancheon has long been popular among residents due to its accessibility, but persistent safety concerns have been raised over flood risks from localized heavy rains and damaged walkways. In particular, the deteriorated facilities increased the risk of slipping accidents, causing inconvenience for residents using the area for walking or cycling.
The district first carried out dredging to remove sand and gravel from the stream and renovated structures that impeded water flow, thereby addressing fundamental flood risks. Walkways and bicycle paths were repaved with enhanced anti-slip features, while stairs, railings, and other aging facilities were fully refurbished. LED marker lights were installed to ensure safe passage even at night.
To further improve convenience for residents, four new stepping stone bridges were built, and ten species of wildflowers-including daisies, hydrangeas, and yellow iris-were planted along the stream banks to enhance the natural scenery. Under Hongjecheon Bridge, a 700-square-meter reed field has been created, which will provide a new attraction next autumn.
During the completion ceremony, participants will take part in a "stream rounding" tour, viewing the recently completed large mural under Jungnicheon Bridge (90 meters long and 3 meters high), as well as the sites for the upcoming landmark waterfall and riverside cafe at World Cupcheon.
