The council announced that it adopted a "proposal urging the improvement and expanded introduction of the rural basic income" during its 312th regular session held on November 20.
This proposal focuses on the need for the government's "rural basic income pilot project" to be operated more effectively, in order to ensure the sustainability of rural areas facing growing challenges such as aging populations, population decline, and increasing income instability.
The proposal includes key demands such as: alleviating the financial burden on local governments by having the national and provincial governments cover 90% of the costs; expanding the regions eligible for the project; and establishing legal and financial foundations for nationwide expansion.
Park Geumrae, Chairperson of the Jindo County Council, stated, "The rural basic income is an essential policy for stabilizing the lives of local residents and improving settlement conditions. We hope the government will increase its share of the funding and expand the eligible regions so that tangible benefits can reach rural communities across the country."
