Pohang Yeongilman Port: The Optimal Starting Point or Transshipment Hub for the Arctic Route!
Pohang City will operate the "Pohang City Arctic Exhibition Hall" at the "2025 Korea Marine Mobility Safety Expo," which will be held at BEXCO in Busan for three days from November 25 to 27, 2025.
This is the first year the Expo is being held under the theme of "Arctic Route & Marine Value Chain," and it will feature over 100 organizations and more than 200 booths.
Aside from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the co-host city of Busan, Pohang is the only local government from across the country participating in the event. Pohang will open a promotional space to introduce the strengths and specialized strategies of Yeongilman Port in the era of the Arctic Route.
Since Yeongilman Port opened in 2009 with the goal of becoming a logistics hub for the Pan-East Sea region, Pohang City has consistently promoted forums such as the 1st Korea-Russia Local Cooperation Forum, the Northeast Asia CEO Economic Cooperation Forum, the Pan-East Sea International Symposium, and the Yeongilman Port Arctic Route Hub Port Forum. These efforts aim to expand the northern economy and foster exchanges and cooperation between Russia and Arctic cities.
With growing expectations for the development of the Arctic Route as a national policy task, the city plans to present strategies to specialize Yeongilman Port for the Arctic Route era, leveraging its advanced science infrastructure in AI, satellite, and robotics.
Accordingly, Pohang City will jointly operate a booth with key research institutes, universities, and companies leading the future of advanced marine science in the region, including Pohang Technopark, the Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence (KIRO), POSTECH, as well as marine R&D center resident companies such as Dongseong Shipbuilding and POSCO Flow.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "Through this Expo, we aim to widely promote Pohang's advanced science infrastructure and marine industry base, and to present clear grounds for attracting an Arctic Route specialized port and the Arctic Shipping Information Center."
During the Expo, the Pohang City Arctic Exhibition Hall will showcase not only Pohang's vision for the Arctic Route, but also major content from participating organizations, exhibits such as underwater robots, and a variety of programs including laser satellite demonstrations. For event-related inquiries, please contact the Pohang City Port Division.
Pohang City is pursuing a transition beyond simple logistics functions to become a smart port that integrates satellite, AI, and autonomous navigation technologies. The city is also focusing on attracting the "Arctic Shipping Information Center," which will be responsible for collecting and analyzing Arctic Route navigation information, as well as expanding polar research infrastructure.
