The "Stage of Dreams" PGA Tour... Becoming a Member Is No Easy Feat
Only the Top 5 at PGA Tour Q-School Earn Cards
Top 20 in Korn Ferry Tour Points Advance to Main Tour
Invited Player Wins Secure Two-Year Full Exemption
Every golfer shares a common wish: to compete on the “stage of dreams,” the PGA Tour in the United States.
This year, the PGA Tour concluded its long journey on November 20 (local time) with the final event of the Fall Series, the RSM Classic, held at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia. The season was once again held on a grand scale, featuring a total of 46 tournaments, including four major championships, eight signature events, three playoff tournaments, and seven Fall Series events.
Since the launch of LIV Golf in 2021, the PGA Tour has strengthened its policies for players. The PGA Tour has created an environment where players can enjoy both wealth and fame. However, the barriers to entry have been rising. After the conclusion of this year’s Fall Series, only the top 100 players in the FedExCup rankings will be eligible to compete on next year’s tour, down from the previous 125. In addition, the number of tickets available through PGA Tour Qualifying (Q) School is gradually decreasing.

The most representative route is to pass the PGA Tour Q-School. Currently, only five players can earn this benefit. It is a demanding process that requires passing both the first and second stages of Q-School and then achieving a strong result in the finals.
Choi Kyungju, known as “Tank,” secured his PGA Tour card by tying for 35th at the 1999 PGA Tour Q-School. After advancing to the U.S. stage, he collected eight career victories and became a leading figure among Korean golfers. Kim Siwoo, who has four PGA Tour wins, became the youngest ever to pass PGA Q-School in 2012 at the age of 17 years and 5 months, but was unable to fully utilize the opportunity due to the minimum age requirement of 18.
This year’s PGA Tour Q-School Finals will be held from December 11 for four days at the Dye’s Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Taehun Ok, who topped the Genesis Point standings on this season’s Korea Professional Golfers’ Association (KPGA) Tour, earned a direct berth to the Q-School Finals. If he finishes in the top five at this event, he will be able to compete on the regular PGA Tour next year.

Most players, including Im Sungjae, Lee Kyunghoon, and Kim Sunghyun, have followed this path. By competing on the Korn Ferry Tour, the second-tier PGA Tour, and finishing within the top 20 in points, players can earn a PGA Tour card. Until last year, the top 25 players were granted cards to the main tour.
Im Sungjae achieved strong results on the Korn Ferry Tour and has since excelled on the world stage. In 2018, he won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour and was named both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Since debuting on the PGA Tour in 2019, he has claimed two victories and is currently ranked 37th in the world, the highest among Korean players.
Kim Sunghyun also passed the Korn Ferry Tour qualifying tournament in 2021 and ranked 12th in points the following year, earning promotion to the regular tour. In 2023, he finished runner-up at the PGA Tour Procore Championship and performed well, but lost his card for 2024. However, by ranking 8th in points on this year’s Korn Ferry Tour, he is set to return to the PGA Tour next year.
This year, Lee Seungtaek, known as “Bul-Gom” (Brown Bear), achieved the milestone of earning PGA Tour playing rights. He finished 5th in last year’s Genesis Point standings, which allowed him to advance directly to the second stage of PGA Tour Q-School. He tied for 14th in the Q-School Finals, thereby securing a Korn Ferry Tour card, which is awarded to the top 40 finishers. This year, Lee reached the top 10 six times, including one runner-up finish, and ranked third in Korn Ferry Tour points, earning him a spot on next year’s regular tour.
Winning an event as an invited player on the PGA Tour can also grant immediate playing rights. This is known as an invited player victory. Players who perform well in Europe, Japan, or Korea may receive invitations to compete in the United States, usually reserved for promising or popular golfers.

As a sponsor’s invitee, he competed in the Bank of Utah Championship on October 26 and captured his first title. Brennan had already won three times on the PGA Tour Americas (third-tier) and topped the money list, which would have earned him a spot on next year’s Korn Ferry Tour. However, by winning the Bank of Utah Championship, he bypassed the Korn Ferry Tour and secured a two-year exemption to compete on the regular PGA Tour.
Kim Joo-hyung earned his place on the PGA Tour through special membership. At the age of 20, he won the Wyndham Championship in 2022 as a special temporary member. He became the first player born after 2000 to win on the PGA Tour and set the record as the youngest Korean winner ever (20 years, 1 month, 18 days).

The PGA Tour is also paying attention to players who excel on the European stage. Players who finish in the top 10 in the DP World Tour points rankings are granted PGA Tour cards. Additionally, those ranked within the top 60 in the world rankings are eligible to participate in major championships and other premier events on the PGA Tour.
