Hanam City Discloses List of Major and Habitual Tax Defaulters Owing 17.4 Billion Won... Launches Strong Collection Measures
Hanam City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Hyunjae) announced that it will release the list of individuals and corporations with large-scale or habitual local tax and non-tax arrears on the 19th, aiming to raise awareness among major and habitual defaulters and promote a culture of responsible payment.
This disclosure is in accordance with Article 11 of the Local Tax Collection Act and Article 7-3 of the Act on the Collection of Local Administrative Sanctions and Charges. The subjects of disclosure are individuals and corporations who, as of January 1, 2025, have been in arrears for more than one year and owe at least 10 million won.
After sending a prior notification regarding the disclosure in April, the city provided a six-month period for explanations to encourage payment. The final list excludes those who have filed appeals, paid more than half of their arrears, are deceased, or are undergoing rehabilitation or bankruptcy procedures.
This year, 38 individuals and 19 corporations-a total of 57 new cases-will be newly disclosed for local tax arrears, amounting to 3.6 billion won. For non-tax revenue such as local administrative sanctions and charges, six individuals and two corporations are in arrears, totaling 192 million won. Among those previously listed, 242 individuals and corporations continue to meet the criteria, and the disclosure will be maintained for arrears totaling 13.6 billion won.
The disclosed items include the name (or business name and representative), age, address, type of arrears, and amount owed. This information can be accessed through Wetax and the Hanam City website.
Along with this disclosure, Hanam City announced strong administrative sanctions against defaulters. Those listed will be subject to restrictions on financial transactions and collection measures by the Korea Customs Service. The city also plans to continue intensive collection activities, including investigations into hidden assets, seizures of real estate and vehicles, and requests for travel bans. When payment is made, the city will review eligibility and promptly remove individuals from the list as appropriate.
