AI Virus Detected in Bird Carcass Found at Commercial Building in Nam-gu, Gwangju
A highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) virus (H5N1) has been detected in a wild bird carcass found at a commercial building in Gwangju, prompting authorities to launch emergency quarantine measures.
According to Gwangju Nam-gu District on November 18, a dead mallard was discovered on the terrace of a commercial building in Bongseon-dong on November 10. The National Institute of Wildlife Disease Control and Prevention conducted a detailed inspection and confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic AI on November 14.
Nam-gu District has designated key small stream areas within a 10-kilometer radius of the building as wild bird surveillance zones and has installed quarantine facilities such as disinfection mats.
Nam-gu District, together with the Livestock Health Control Association, completed on-site quarantine measures twice and requested 65 nearby poultry farms to strengthen their biosecurity protocols.
