According to the New York Times on the 17th (local time), Mamdani’s team stated that they contacted White House officials last week to coordinate a meeting with President Trump.
This was made public just one day after President Trump made a relatively conciliatory gesture. The previous day, President Trump said, “The Mayor of New York will want to meet with us to solve these problems,” adding, “We hope everything will work out well for New York.”
Mamdani’s campaign stated that if the meeting takes place, the main agenda will likely be the housing crisis, in which residents unable to afford New York’s exorbitant home prices are being pushed out of the city.
Mamdani, who will be inaugurated on January 1 next year, expressed willingness to cooperate if President Trump seeks a common solution to this issue, but, according to the New York Times, he also questioned whether President Trump truly has the will to do so.
At a press conference, Mamdani criticized the president, saying, “The president pledged to lower the cost of living, including grocery prices, but his actions have had the opposite effect on New Yorkers.”
The coordination of a meeting between Mamdani and President Trump is drawing even more attention as it comes at a time when the U.S. federal government is threatening to deploy the National Guard to enforce immigration crackdowns.
Recently, the Trump administration has pursued more aggressive immigration enforcement in New York and has been considering whether to use the Coast Guard facility on Staten Island as a detention center for immigrants.
