Taebaek City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Lee Sangho) announced on the 18th that it was selected as an excellent institution in the carbon neutrality implementation performance category at the "2025 Local Government Carbon Neutrality Conference" held at Sono Calm Yeosu on the 17th, and received the Chairman's Award from the Korea Environment Corporation.

View original imageThis competition, organized by the Ministry of Environment, was launched to discover and promote leading cases of carbon neutrality in local areas. A total of 76 cases were submitted by metropolitan and basic local governments nationwide, and the excellent institutions were selected through a rigorous evaluation by experts.
Taebaek City has been implementing a variety of policies to realize carbon neutrality, centered on its vision of transitioning "from a coal city to a clean energy city." The city reportedly received high marks in all evaluation categories, including ▲appropriateness of the projects ▲effectiveness ▲proactiveness ▲scalability.
In particular, Taebaek City drew attention for its implementation of just energy transition policies, such as a resident-participatory wind pension (profit-sharing model) utilizing the Taebaek Gadeoksan Wind Power Complex, and the establishment of a clean methanol production facility. The city was also recognized for its proactive approach to discovering new industries and engaging in international cooperation to build an industrial ecosystem centered on clean energy.
Lee Sangho, Mayor of Taebaek City, said, "Being selected as an excellent institution is an achievement made possible by the joint efforts of our citizens and the local community. We will overcome the limitations of being a former mining area and build a sustainable future city through energy transition."
