Expected to Alleviate Parking Inconvenience for Residents

On November 17, Yongsan District Office in Seoul (headed by District Mayor Park Heeyoung) completed construction of the ninth “Leftover Land Parking Lot,” with a capacity of 50 spaces, in Itaewon 1-dong and held a ribbon cutting ceremony. The parking lot began full-scale operations on November 18.

This project is part of the “Public Parking Lot on Leftover Land Initiative,” which aims to alleviate chronic parking shortages and improve residential environments. The district’s goal is to efficiently utilize idle urban land to reduce inconvenience for residents and improve the local traffic environment.

The ninth parking lot is located near the district office at 36-34 Itaewon-dong. Of the total 50 spaces, 35 are designated as resident-priority parking, and 15 as shared parking. Since last year, Yongsan District has been in discussions with private entities such as real estate development corporations to seek ways to reduce costs. Given the difficulty of securing new land due to high land prices, the district established the public parking lot by utilizing idle spaces without additional land acquisition, which is a notable feature of this project.

Since the launch of the eighth popularly elected administration, Yongsan District has created a total of 10 public parking lots with 417 spaces by utilizing leftover land. Next month, the district plans to add 10 more spaces to the tenth leftover land parking lot in Bogwang-dong, expanding it to a total of 19 spaces. The parking lots in Itaewon 1-dong and Bogwang-dong have been designated as the ninth and tenth lots, respectively, according to the order in which agreements were pursued.

Park Heeyoung, Mayor of Yongsan District, stated, “Leftover land parking lots are a welcome relief for residents in densely populated residential areas,” adding, “We will continue to actively identify idle land and strengthen cooperation with landowners to do our utmost to resolve parking shortages.”
